Tesler’s Law

Tesler's Law, also known as The Law of Conservation of Complexity, is a principle in user experience design that states that the complexity of a system is fixed and can't be reduced, only shifted from one part of the system to another. In other words, reducing complexity in one part of a system will inevitably increase complexity in another part of the system.


This law can be applied to a variety of design scenarios, such as software design, product design, or system architecture. For example, simplifying the user interface of a software application might make it easier for users to complete tasks, but could increase the complexity of the underlying system architecture required to support that user interface.


A practical example of Tesler's Law in action is the use of abstraction and modularity in software design. By creating modular components that are abstracted from the rest of the system, you can reduce the complexity of individual components while maintaining overall system complexity.


Overall, by considering Tesler's Law in your designs, you can create more balanced and effective systems that are better able to handle complexity. By understanding that complexity is fixed and cannot be reduced, only shifted, you can make informed design decisions that prioritize simplicity and maintainability, leading to a better user experience and more effective design.
